Being an Air Hostess is one of the most highly paid jobs in aviation as a person gets to work with various airlines. It is a dream of many students which has been increasing every day.

To be an Air Hostess, a student can opt for either certificate, diploma or degree course after the 12th. A student also needs various skills like confidence, patience, teamwork, good communication and a good and pleasing personality.

In this article, we will be discussing how to become an Air Hostess after class 12, along with job options and salary provided. 

What Qualification Is Required for An Air Hostess?

Following are the primary qualifications that a student must have to be an Air Hostess after class 12.

  • A student must have completed their 10+2 or equivalent from a good institute with minimum passing marks.
  • Students who haven't completed high school must give a GED Test, i.e., General Educational Development Test.
  • Students with a degree in Hospitality, Tourism and Travel are preferred.
  • A student must have basic knowledge of computers and math competencies.
  • Students with good command of the English language and a knowledge of any international language have an advantage.
  • A student has to clear a 3 to 6 weeks training program at the base location of the particular airline to move further with their training.
  • Once a student clears the formal training program, they gain a certificate and license from an authorized body that regulates all aspects of civil aviation in that country, for example, the FAA (The Federal Aviation Administration) in the US.

Physical and Medical Requirements

To be an Air Hostess after class 12th, one must have the following physical and medical requirements:

  • A candidate needs to be young, slender and good looking.
  • Their age must be between 17 to 26 years.
  • They must have a minimum height of 157cms or 5'2 inches.
  • They must be mentally fit; this will be determined with the help of various tests.
  • A candidate shouldn't have acrophobia (fear of heights).
  • They must be unmarried.
  • Their weight must be according to their height and age. They cannot be overweight or underweight.
  • They shouldn't have any visible tattoos or piercings on their body.
  • They must have good eye vision; eyesight must be 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in another.
  • In case they wear glasses, they must switch to lenses.
  • They must know how to swim as it is required in case of emergencies to save the lives of passengers.
  • They must pass various medical tests like blood tests, urine tests, AIDS, Ultra Sound, Eye Test, Stool Test, Chest X-rays, etc. In case of even the most minor illness or infection, the candidate will be rejected.
  • They must have appropriately maintained nails, hair and skin. 
  • Makeup skills are a plus point as most airlines make their air hostesses wear heavy makeup.

Selection Process 

To become an Air Hostess after class 12th, a student needs to apply to various institutes depending on the course they opt for; as mentioned above, there are three types of courses certificate, diploma and degree course. They can apply to these by filling an application offline or in the college.

Once applied, they need to go through 3 stages to get selected, these are:

1. Written Examination: This is the first stage; in this, the candidate has to give a written test that tests their intelligence, numerical ability, reasoning skills and general awareness.

2. Group Discussion: Once they've passed the written examination, they need to pass the Group Discussion round. In this round, they are given a specific topic and perform a group discussion on it. This helps in testing their teamwork quality, patience level and communication skills.

3. Interview: On clearing the GD round, a candidate must appear for the Interview in which they need to give a One-on-One interview. This helps test their personality and passion for working in the Aviation Industry.

Different institutes may have varied selection processes, but this is the general selection process. All institutes must operate according to the DGCA Guidelines that states a candidate can be eligible for admission only after they've qualified for a written test and interview session.

Once a candidate is selected, they need to undergo a minimum of 6 months of training before beginning their Air Hostess career.
