DET Score Scale

All Duolingo scores are on a scale of 10–160. Certified tests include sub scores that measure your proficiency in specific areas.

Scores on the DET are reported in increments of 5 points (10, 15, 20, 25, etc.) up to a maximum of 160. These scores align with the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR), a global benchmark for language competency.

The following table details the DET score scale and the meaning of each Duolingo score range:

Duolingo score range

CEFR Level

Proficiency Level

10 - 55

A1 / A2

Basic

60 - 85

B1

Intermediate

90 - 115

B2

Upper-Intermediate

120-160C1/C2Advanced

It's crucial to remember that scores below 120 reflect various degrees of non-proficiency in English, while scores of 120 or higher are typically regarded as proficient.

Duolingo English Test Subscores

Duolingo sub scores are reported in two categories: integrated sub scores and individual sub scores. This is an illustration of how the Duolingo English Test score report could appear:

Duolingo English Test Score Report

Overall Score: 130

Literacy Subscore: 125

Comprehension Subscore: 135

Conversation Subscore: 120

Production Subscore: 140

For example, a total score of 130 is regarded as a strong performance. Sub scores, on the other hand, offer further information: the test-taker performed exceptionally well in Comprehension and Production but comparatively poorly in Literacy and Conversation.

Duolingo English Test Score in comparison with IELTS Band Scores

The Duolingo score card is in the range of 10-160, while IELTS uses a 0-9 band scale. To compare them, test takers often refer to the conversion charts, although these comparisons are only approximations.

For instance, a DET score of 120-125 is generally considered equivalent to an IELTS Band 6.5. Here is a comparison table of Duolingo English Test scores to IELTS band scores:

Duolingo English Test Score

IELTS Band Score

10 - 60

0 - 4

65 - 80

4.5 - 5

85 - 95
