Latest Updates on Canada Student Visa for Indian Students

  • In a significant announcement, Canada has set a new cap on the number of study permits to be issued to international students in 2024.  For 2024, the cap is set at approximately 364,000, marking a 35% reduction from previous years. This decision reflects Canada's commitment to maintaining a balanced approach to international education, ensuring that students receive the support they need while mitigating pressures on housing, healthcare, and other essential services.
  • The Student Partners Program (SPP), initiated in 2009, has been replaced by the Study Direct Stream (SDS) for international students aspiring to study in Canada.
  • The other major change under SDS is the requirement for students to obtain a minimum of 6 bands in each module of their language proficiency test to be eligible for a student visa application.
  • Moreover, students under SDS are now required to make annual fee payments instead of the previous semester-wise payment structure. Failing to pay the full annual fee with a band score of 6 in each module may result in the students’ applications being processed under the general visa category.
  • Unlike the SPP, which was associated with specific colleges or universities, SDS is directly linked to individual students, streamlining the application process and requirements.
  • Last but not least, if students’ post-graduation work permit has expired or will expire before December 31, 2023 -  they are eligible to apply for an open work permit of up to 18 months under a new public policy.

Canada Student Visa Rejection

Since September 2022, the Canadian student visa rejection rate has been 60% for many of the Indian states. This is way above the average Canada visa refusal rate of 30%. Most of these rejections are based on common reasons like financial insufficiency, program and university of choice, etc.

The reasons for the rejection of a Canada Study Visa by IRCC are briefed below:

  • Financial Insufficiency: Proof of funds is crucial for studying in Canada. The rules are that students need adequate funds for the first year of the course/program. If the immigration authorities suspect financial insufficiency, the visa application will be rejected.
  • Choice of Program: If the visa officer questions the choice of program the applicants choose, their Canadian Student Visa may get rejected. In cases where the chosen program does not align with the applicant’s academic or employment background, the chances of visa rejection are increased.
  • Letter of Acceptance: A Letter of Acceptance from a Canadian DLI is mandatory for applying for a study permit. The Canada Student Visa may be rejected if the applicant’s acceptance letter is in question. Along with the acceptance letter, the applicants must meet the minimum entry requirements for the specific institution. If the visa officer doubts that the applicant is not meeting the minimum requirements, his/her student visa may be rejected.
  • English Language Proficiency: Proof of meeting the minimum IELTS score for Canada Student Visa requirement is mandatory for non-English speaking international students. Whether you apply through the SDS or SPP program, proof of English language proficiency is necessary.
