The University was first started as a school in Ballarat in 1870 and then restructured as a Teacher's College in 1926 and as an Institute of Advanced Education in 1976 and as a University College in 1990 and finally gaining official University status in 2014 getting established as Federal University Australia. The University now totally has five campuses, each one in Ballarat, Berwick, Brisbane, Gippsland and Wimmera. Ballarat Campus has Bella Guerin Residence, which has a setup of a two-storey building located in a pleasant native bushland setting. Each two-storey building houses 10-11 students who can share a kitchen, living room and dining room. The residence also has free laundry facilities for students.

Gippsland Campus has three residences - Halls of Residence, West Residence and North Residence.

Halls of Residence - Halls of Residence is a modern building with sets of complexes having totally 50 bedrooms. Both complexes have a spacious kitchen and a living room.

West Residence - West Residence has fully-furnished rooms and shared facilities. Each building has a fully equipped kitchen, lounge and laundry.

North Residence - The North Residence is located beside the main campus and offers two layout options for rooms - standard and ensuite. For the buildings in the North Residence, there is one fully equipped kitchen, lounge and laundry. Each building has a washing machine and a clothes dryer.

The Berwick campus has a Halls of Residence building providing a variety of living options for students - ensuite rooms, self-contained apartments and shared facilities. This residence has spacious grounds, landscaped gardens, courtyards and parking facilities.
