What is Considered a Good PTE Score?

A good PTE score varies depending on your chosen university, country, and programme. The PTE Academic is scored on a scale of 10–90, with 90 being the highest. The score you need will depend on your purpose—whether it is university admission, migration, or professional licensing.

Generally, higher education institutions expect scores in the 50–65 range, while competitive programmes and visa pathways may require 70+. To understand how each skill contributes to your final score, you can explore the PTE test pattern and syllabus, which explains the marking for Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening.

Below is what different PTE score ranges typically indicate:

PTE Score RangeQualification
85-90Excellent English proficiency is usually not a prerequisite for entrance to undergraduate programmes, although it could be for postgraduate studies at prestigious universities. Suitable for immigration to nations with strict English language requirements or for high-level professional employment.
76-84Extremely high level of English proficiency, appropriate for entrance to the majority of postgraduate courses as well as numerous undergraduate courses at prestigious universities. Fulfils the conditions for skilled migration to Canada and Australia, among other nations.
65-75Proficiency in English fulfils the prerequisites for enrollment in a multitude of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. sufficient in many circumstances for skilled migration.
50-64Some undergraduate programmes may tolerate moderate English proficiency, but elite colleges are unlikely to. Maybe not up to the minimal standards needed for skilled migration.
30-49Basic level of English competence, possibly acceptable with extra English language assistance but probably insufficient for straight university entrance. Not likely to satisfy the need for skilled migration.
10-29Too little English competence would not be acceptable for skilled migration or most university programmes without a large amount of additional language instruction.

It is important to remember that PTE score criteria can differ significantly based on the university, programme, and immigration authority. And, you need a strong PTE preparation plan to ensure you reach your ideal PTE score band.

Make sure you fulfil the required PTE eligibility criteria by always consulting the official guidelines for the place you intend to visit.

How to Calculate PTE Score?

The PTE Academic score report is divided into two main parts:

Overall Score: The overall PTE score ranges from 10 to 90. It reflects your overall English proficiency based on performance across all test sections.

Communicative Skills Scores: These include Speaking, Writing, Reading, and Listening. Each skill is scored individually on a 10–90 scale.

Together, they show your proficiency in each language domain.

How the PTE Scoring System Works?

PTE Academic uses a fully automated, AI-based scoring system, ensuring consistency and eliminating human bias.

Automated Scoring: The PTE scoring system combines human validation with automatic scoring. The advanced algorithms analyse your responses for factors such as content relevance, form, grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation, and fluency. Each task contributes to one or more skill areas. For example: “Read Aloud” contributes to both Speaking and Reading.

  • After analysing the candidate's responses, complex algorithms provide the task's first scores.
  • The algorithms evaluate a number of factors, including task completion, accuracy, fluency, and vocabulary.

Human Validation: A part of the PTE scoring system is reviewed by skilled human specialists, especially for assignments requiring subjective assessment such as essays and oral presentations. This guarantees consistency and accuracy in the scoring.

The total score for a skill is then determined by adding the individual scores for every task within that skill area. The average of the four communication skill scores determines the final PTE score.
