Types of Scholarships in Ireland

Ireland provides scholarships of several kinds, both fully and partially funded. These scholarships are provided by colleges, universities, trusts, the Irish government etc.

The three types of scholarships available for international students are:

  • University Scholarships: Almost all the leading universities in Ireland offer domestic and international students scholarships. The scholarship can cover your tuition fees, living expenses, airfare etc. Maynooth University Scholarships, Trinity College Dublin Scholarships, and NUI Galway International Student Scholarships count a few.
  • Government Scholarships: The Irish government provides several scholarships to international students they feel as deserving. It is the Higher Education Authority (HEA) that deals with this. The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Program is an example of it.
  • Scholarships Offered By Other Organisations: Apart from the abovementioned types, a few trusts and organisations offer scholarships to international students. They have their eligibility criteria. You can know more about the same if you read further. Fulbright Scholarships, Welsh Fellowship etc., are examples of it.

Ireland Government Scholarship

The Irish government provides over 60 scholarships to students, most of which are fully funded. You can apply for all those you fall inside the eligibility criteria. You will be shortlisted for at least one. A few government scholarships include
  • The DIT Centenary Scholarship Program: This merit-based scholarship covers 50% of your tuition fees.
  • Irish Aid Funded Fellowship Training Program: Students from particular countries get a 100% coverage on tuition fees, living expenses and travel expenses, and a monthly allowance.
  • Claddagh Scholarship Program: 10 Master’s students from China will get an amount of €5000.
  • Galway Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) Scholarships: GMIT offers four scholarships, ranging from €498 - €3600.
These include some of the major scholarships. However, the list is not limited to the above ones, and you can find more about all the types of scholarships if you read further.
