What are the types of university rankings in Maclean's?

Established in 1991, Maclean’s annual university rankings aim to provide a comprehensive view of Canadian universities with a methodology that incorporates a wide range of factors. The rankings are based on six main categories: students, faculty, resources, student support, reputation, and a new category introduced in 2022, equity and diversity. The weightings of each category are adjusted depending on whether the university is classified as a comprehensive university or an undergraduate university.

Maclean's University Ranking 2023 comprises three different types of rankings. These are:

Type of Rankings

Description

Comprehensive Universities

This ranking includes universities that offer a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs and have significant research activity.

Primarily undergraduate universities:

This ranking includes universities that focus mainly on undergraduate education and offer few graduate programs.

Medical/Doctoral Universities

This ranking includes universities that have a broad range of undergraduate, graduate, and professional programs, as well as significant research activity in health sciences.

Apart from these, Maclean’s University rankings also release rankings featuring Top Schools by Reputation. These are based on the opinions of university faculty and senior administrators across Canada on the quality and reputation of Canadian universities.

What is the Methodology for 2023 Maclean’s Rankings?

Established in 1991, Maclean’s annual university rankings aim to provide a comprehensive view of Canadian universities with a methodology that incorporates a wide range of factors. Initially, the rankings are categorised on the above-mentioned categories, which are further classified into six divisions- students, faculty, resources, student support, reputation, and a new category introduced in 2022, equity and diversity. The weightings of each category are adjusted depending on the type of institution, courses offered, funding, and other performance indicators.
