Program Structure

To prepare students for a profession in dentistry, the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) programme in Canada is a demanding and thorough undergraduate programme. The programme has academic and clinical components, normally lasting for four years.
During the programme's first two years, students concentrate on foundational sciences like anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, and microbiology. These classes give students the theoretical understanding they need to comprehend the anatomy and physiology of the human body and the origins and effects of various diseases. Students participate in laboratory activities, small-group tutorials, and conventional classroom lectures to better comprehend the subject matter.
Students start moving from the classroom to the clinic in the third and fourth years of the programme. This focuses on acquiring the abilities necessary to identify and treat various oral health disorders, and it includes both didactic education and practical hands-on experience. Topics like dental radiography, oral pathology, periodontics, endodontics, orthodontics, and paediatric dentistry are frequently covered in the curriculum. Additionally, students take part in various clinical rotations where they treat actual patients while working under the guidance of qualified dentists.
Students must complete several clinical hours throughout the programme and show proficiency in various techniques and skills. This entails doing oral exams, obtaining radiographs, giving local anaesthesia, and conducting multiple surgical procedures. Numerous BDS programmes in Canada offer a variety of elective courses as well as chances for research and professional development in addition to the core curriculum. Courses in specialised dental fields like prosthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery, or implant dentistry may fall under this category. A student's awareness of dentistry and oral health may be improved by engaging in research assignments or other academic pursuits.
The BDS programme in Canada is a demanding and thorough undergraduate course of study to prepare students for the dentistry profession. Graduates are ready to serve patients with high-quality dental treatment and contribute to the larger field of oral health thanks to a strong emphasis on fundamental science and hands-on clinical practice.
